About the Event

This is a book on relationships and communication and feminism and changing the world. It's a book about how a powerful woman like Melinda Gates, a woman has tangibly helped shape the world, found her purpose and voice.  It's so easy to develop a "preachy", condescending, or academic tone when writing about heavy topics like feminism, women's health, and empowering women through education. Gates makes the content highly approachable and relatable through stories of her experiences. Her passion comes from observing life in different communities, asking questions, and listening to all the people. It was interesting to learn about the source of Gates' drive, the choices she's made, and the people who have moved her.  The Moment of Lift was a personable, relatable, and authentic listen. I can't wait to read this book over and over again, to highlight my favorite passages and underline poignant thoughts. Of the many quotable lines, "Tradition without discussion kills moral progress" stood out the most in this first go through. Modern day oppression is entrenched in unquestioned tradition.  While listening to the book I had this “I want to meet her, be her, work with her!” feeling. I still can’t shake that feeling; so much of what Gates had to say resonated deeply with my principles, beliefs, and interests.  This is a book for everyone. Perhaps, graduating high schoolers would benefit the most from it. There are lessons and thoughts and suggestions in here that will serve them well throughout their lives, maybe even motivate and direct them towards a passion. Then again, the beauty - the luxury - of living in America is that it’s never too late to discover those lessons and channel that passion.
